Aspects of War
We have concentrated this booklet on the stories of those left at home rather than the men sent away to fight for their country. There is no doubt that many men did see active service overseas, but as Loddon and Chedgrave were in the middle of a farming area many men were in reserved occupations.
First hand recollections from the First World War in Loddon and Chedgrave are of course limited to some elderly residents who were children at the time, but several photographs exist which have stirred memories of stories told by parents and grand parents. Many soldiers were stationed at Langley Hall and often marched along the High Street to assemble on Church Plain (click here for photo).
Dr McClintock set up a Red Cross Hospital in the Methodist Hall on George Lane (see Medical Matters). His wife was the commandant and many local ladies acted as volunteer nurses.
